Career Positions

 

- Must have a high school diploma or GED.

- Must be 18 years of age for a career firefighter position.

-Must have a valid South Carolina Driver's License.

- All applicants will be subject to a personnel test, drug and alcohol
  test, driving history inquiry, and criminal history inquiry.

The City of Lancaster first posts available City positions in-house to afford
an opportunity for advancement and personal growth. Those positions not
filled internally are recruited through the One Stop Career Center, 705
North White Street, Lancaster, S.C., 29720.

It should be noted that career firefighter positions are usually filled from
the volunteer company who are considered city employees and receive a
monthly wage for services rendered.

The newly hired member will be required to attend the eight week Firefighter Recruit program at he South Carolina Fire Academy in Columbia, South Carolina.  The course work there will include:
- Basic First and CPR
- Hazardous Materials Operations
- IFSAC Firefighter I
- IFSAC Firefighter II
- Basic Automobile Extrication
- Rescuing the Rescuer

The new member will also be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within six months of hire.

Once assigned to a shift, the firefighter will have to complete (including SCFA Recruit school) 343 hours of training during their first year on the job. They must also maintain 20 hours per month of continuing training.

We work a 24/48 shift, 24 hours on shift (7:45 - 8:00 next morning), then two days off. We operate three shifts, so our stations are manned 24 hours a day, 365 day a year... 366 in leap years.


Volunteer Positions

To apply for a volunteer position, please visit Lancaster City Hall and fill out a Volunteer Firefighter application with the Human Resources Department.  The application will be held on file until there is a sufficient number to conduct interviews.

Volunteer Firefighters must also take required courses in firefighting, but are not
required to enroll in the eight week recruit school. They must, within the prescribed
time period, take and successfully complete minimum requirements for membership.
These courses are usually offered in the evenings. Volunteer firefighters may apply for
career positions, (after meeting the prescribed requirements) in the event of a career
opening.


Volunteers have scheduled training twice a month. They meet the second Thursday and fourth Sunday of each month. Volunteers must take part in 15 hours of training monthly.

Fire Explorers

The Explorer Post is for young adults age 14-21 that have an interest in the Fire Service.  To apply for an Explorer position, please come by Station 1 at 401 East Arch Street and ask for an Explorer Program Application.  Applications can be picked up Monday through Friday from 9am till 5pm.
